A thorough resource for learning

First, students can learn about the order of operations with a complete interactive lesson. They will learn the math principles step by step, answering questions and working through example problems. This is designed to build a thorough understanding and working "hands-on" knowledge of the order of operations.

The popular mnemonic aids are also presented, but Smooth Operators goes beyond that. It should be preferable to remember and work with data in a pattern you truly understand. The interactive lesson encourages students to think about that pattern and shows the logical reasoning behind it.

There's even an optional section for introducing or reviewing exponents--these are an important part of the order of operations, so it's included free in Smooth Operators for the benefit of students, to ensure that this is a comprehensive and complete resource for learning.

Innovative practice

"Smooth Operators" isn't just a name; the practice system itself actually is pretty smooth. Students simply click on the operators in the correct order. Click on a multiplication sign, and the two numbers beside it are automatically multiplied.

This unique point-and-click system lets students focus completely on which operators come first so that they can master this knowledge. The number of operations per problem and the size of operands can be adjusted.

In case of a wrong answer, students have the opportunity to try again, and the software keeps track of how well they do. (Read about scoring below.)

Testing

Smooth Operators doesn't wimp out when it comes to putting all the skills to the test, including the arithmetic involved in the problems. It's important for students to calculate and solve entire problems on their own, without aid.

The Test mode requires students to type in the answer to each problem. If they get it wrong, they can try again, but the score will be recorded. (Read about scoring below.)

Students can do their calculations on paper or use mental math to keep skills honed. The complexity of order-of-operations problems are a perfect opportunity to practice arithmetic. Limiting calculator use and enforcing paper calculations at least part of the time is recommended.

Keeping score

Did they get it right the first time? Did they keep trying until they got it right?

Smooth Operators gives you the whole picture--how many problems a student answered correctly on the first try, and how persistent he or she was in trying until the problems were solved.

The running tally is always displayed.

Crucial math skills for education, work, and life

In a high-tech and global economy, students can't afford to miss out on math. For example, international tests suggest that American students are falling behind their peers in advanced math subjects during junior high and high school. The Third International Math and Science Study (TIMSS) showed that U.S. twelfth graders came in near last for advanced math skills when compared to 20 other countries. U.S. math skills in the fourth and eighth grades were a little better than average. Students are not learning and understanding enough advanced mathematics, and they may be progressing too slowly.

That's not good news for Americans. But wherever you're from, it's clear that math skills are vital to make students competitive in today's world. Order of operations is the first step on a journey of skills that every student should take, and Smooth Operators provides a fun and convient way to get started.
